Jez Graham Welcomes You

I never know what I'm going to play at the airport. I just look around and feel the vibe of the travelers and then I begin. I do always know which songs I'm going to end the first set and the last set with though. The first set closer is almost always "Take Five" which can present a problem as it seems the popularity of that one inevitably brings someone over to the piano and then I feel bad about taking a break so I sometimes incorporate Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry Bout A Thing" for awhile to extend the set,it fits perfectly over the 5/4 groove. The end of the night is always "One For My Baby" and sometimes it morphs into "I'l Be Seeing You" although on occasion I substitute both of those for the Medley of "Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight" and I play the drum solo on the low notes of the piano. Anyway back to this stream of songs- As we begin, I'm partway into "California Feelin" a Brian Wilson deep cut that he wrote with the poet/lyricist Stephen Kalinich who I have had the pleasure of working on a bunch of projects. The next song is another one of my Brian favorites "Airplane", Now it's time for some Sinatra "In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning" The title song from what some feel is the first concept album, written by Dave Mann and Bob Hilliard. Now it's time for some blues to get in The Bernstein/Sondheim "Somewhere" from "West Side Story". My rendition is definitely influenced by Aretha. Check out her version if you haven't, I've always loved her piano playing as well as her singing. Next Up is "A Day In The Life". More details soon.........
